WTN: 2010 Lapierre Morgon and thoughts on '09/'10

Opened the 2010 Lapierre Morgon for some co-workers last night, and was bowled over by the freshness and lightness (in a positive way) of the wine. The berry/cherry fruit was still quite forward, with some light spice and chalky earth elements as well. There was even a little bit of herb. Just lovely. Drink the damn thing now!

Drinking the wine got me to thinking about 2009 versus 2010. I bought a lot of 2009. I really like 2009. I bought some 2010 - not as much, but not a tiny amount. 2009 is riper. 2009 is darker. 2009 is heavier. 2009 is still beaujolais, especially if you pit it against other wines (e.g. lighter Cote de Beaune Burgundies). 2009 is fall where 2010 is spring. Fall has great charms, especially when it comes after hot summer days and brings refreshment from what seemed like the intense heaviness of the dog days of August - even as the days grow shorter. Spring is different charms - brightness, renewal.

We need them both.

Nice note. I've really enjoyed the 2010, just drinking them to fast.
Anyone had the 2011 Lapierre yet? I'm enjoying the Beaujolais vintage (more like 2009 in style than 2010) but haven't had Lapierre yet.

Haven't had a single 11 yet personally, haven't even seen them in stores here. Did just grab another case of a '10--the Clos de Roilette Griffe du Marquis which has been my favorite of the few '10's I've tried so far.

Uhhh, you remember my note on it? ("Several Pleasant Surprises", posted 3/31) :D

FWIW, I've really liked the '11s I've had so far, moreso than from any other vintage since 2002. To the extent that the wine budget permits, I'm going long on them.

Fine point, but in all fairness different people have different levels of interests in different regions. So some people will be more vintage-sensitive for certain wines.

But Rahsaan - that's my point! I'm not saying every person has to like every style. I'm just saying that the different styles are equally valid. I find your expression actually less fair.

Oh, ok. I thought 'we need them both' meant 'we need them both in the cellar'. Either way, good wines in many vintages!

Well I nee them both, but then I am a Beaujolais heretic who enjoys ripe vintages. Don't tell the cool kids.

I see no reason to drink them up now.

I just got a bottle of this. I got the bottle, from a very, very surprising place. Those who know my purchasing habits will probably figure it out. And be all the more surprised for it.

Speaking of Thevenet, I had a lovely bottle of the 2011 tonight. Not sure I would call it amazing, but it did spark the desire in me to start buying the wines again. I've been burned with too many off bottles in the past, but delicious is delicious.
