WTN: A Couple of 2001 Chateauneuf du Papes

2001 Le Vieux Donjon - aromas of a nicely aged CdP...florals, Asian spices, and olive tapenade - very pretty. More of those flavors on the palate and sweet red cherries. Lots of texture and a nice finish. For me, this is drinking at peak.

2001 Domaine du Pegau - funky Pegau aromas of that telltale barnyard, along with herbs and licorice. Less barnyard on the palate, but it still hovers, although the fruit can get through, and shows blood, beef, ending with black olive notes. Walks a fine line between being clean and dirty, and I can't say I love it, but I can find some enjoyment, especially as it sits in the glass.

It's interesting, that Chateauneuf du Pape was the first area of interest for me in France, but it lost me starting with the 2007 vintage. Whether it is being manipulated or affected by global warming, the wines of the region are becoming too ripe and too homogenous for me. The 1998s and 2001s suit me just fine for current drinking.

Thanks! I have both, and have been thinking about looking in. Love the funk on Pegau!

A couple of hours later, and the Pegau became prettier, and I can say I really like it.

Getting tempting...so many bottles, so little cool weather left.

Diane,
Thanks for the notes. I have a lot of bottles of the '01 Pegau, but am unlikely to get to them until working my way through the '98s,
99s, '00s and '95s. There is most decidedly a Pegau funk, though.

Hi,

Last month I participated in a horizontal 2001 tasting. By far the '01 Pegau was the only wine tht showed the traditional noise and aromas you would expect.
Some brett, leather etc.
The wine list included:

2001 Dom. Barville BROTTE
2001 E.Guigal
2001 La CRAU V.Telegraphe - excellent!
2001 Reserve PEGAU - exceptional!
2001 Vielles Vignes V.Julienne
2001 Beaucastel
2001 Hommage Perrin Beaucastel (corked!!!)

Eli -. The one VT I had was not a proper bottle, and I do have others to try. I have found the Beaucastel to still taste very young. Your tasting sounds very interesting, but too bad about that Hommage.

Mark - I still have a bottle of the 2000 to get to, but I was anxious to check on the 2001.
