Single Malt Scotch Lovers: word

I know we all tend to scoff at competitions and points awards and such---but when a rather impressive panel of spirits professionals is in such unanimity, it's worth paying taking note of.

The Ultimate Spirits Challenge, run by F. Paul Pacult and with such illustrious sniffers and sippers as Dale DeGroff, just posted their 2013 Ultimate Spirits Challenge results. It's a list worth purview.

And Highland Park Scotch emerged as a rather spectacular winner, with the first 100 point spirits score ever issued by the USC crew. In addition, all the other iterations of well-aged Highland Park gained Finalist status, scored well into the 90s all, and got the highest reccos. Considering they were in pretty stiff competition, that's impressive.

Here's the article I just posted, if you're interested.

It may be very good, and at the price it oughta be, and I dearly love single malts, but it's as out of my price range as Cheval Blanc. I expect I'll never taste either.

Ad that's another reason I like to hang out in really good bars, John. A single serving I can figure out a way to justify. A bottle? Not bloody likely.

But get out to Portland and I'll share some 12 and 18 year old (my personal favorite) with you.

I'm a big fan, but I hate it when a a malt I like gets big points, just like I always hoped that the Wine Advocate would give every wine I ever wanted to buy a score of 89. Get a big score and the prices escalate beyond consideration.

We pay more for single malts here trhan just about anywhere else in the world. My wife just brought me back a bottle of Laphroaig 10 for $40 US. Here is costs me $83 for the same bottle!!

What, you think I buy this stuff?

Love it, yes...but pay all that money? Heck, that's why I'm in the business. :D
