This Madiran sports a solid, high-quality natural cork closure. Opened 2+ hours prior to serving.

Lovely dark garnet colour; superb aroma of spice-tinged black olives, bell pepper, and some tar. Truly the antithesis of the vast majority of fruit-driven reds!

Tart, dry entry; this is immediately followed by lithe, tight tannins that grip the tongue early, holding onto it the whole time as the wine moves across the palate. Very crisp and astringent, with spicy replays. Truly a welcome change from the tyranny of modern fashion.

Well balanced, but on the dry side (hooray!). The finish is gently warmed by alcohol, and leaves a really nice layer of oak spice in its wake.

Purchased at Vintages for $15.95 - and it's a superb wine for the price.

The LCBO site lists the wine as "Tannat with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon in support" and indicates that "this wine spent 12 months in oak barrels to tame its powerful tannins and add oaky layers of complexity." I'd say the tannins haven't been overly tamed - and that's just how I like 'em!
