WTN: 2004 Pontet Canet

by David M. Bueker » Thu Jan 17, 2013 1:19 pm

2004 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (1/16/2013)
Consumed over about 2 hours with dinner. Initially this half bottle was rather tight and unyielding. It showed a density but no features - essentially a blank wall. About 45 minutes after opening, the wine began to take on nuance, gain fruit and get more and more supple with added air. The last few sips showed quite a bit of fruit, a firm tannic spine and a persistent finish. Perhaps a 1 hour decant would have been beneficial, or leave alone for another 2-3 years (from 375 ml).
