In today's NYTimes, WilliamGrimes writes about new-fangled corkscrews:

including a British model that sells for $120,000. I'd like to see a picture of that one.

Sort of a solution in search of a problem, I'd say.

The NYT acknowledges that for wine lovers, this is ...."a festival of unwanted gifts, of gizmos and gadgets..." and yet they go on to review those same gifts, gizmos and gadgets. I'm sorry but don't get it.

Grimes made me laugh:
leading the parade is the electric corkscrew, a baroque solution to a problem that has baffled no one for the last five centuries. These devices infest the market, recognizable by their sleek design — they resemble modernist pepper mills — and sublime pointlessness.

Too bad they didn't look at some gift possibilities that might interest geeks- Durand, Laguioles, etc

I believe you must read the entire article with tongue firmly emplanted in cheek. It is dripping with sarcasm and just a wee bit of arrogance.

These are definitely solutions in need of problems. More power to the inventors, but the basic waiter's corkscrew seems to meet my needs just fine. I do have an Ah-So for those very rare occasions (twice since I took up this hobby about 12 years ago) that the standard corkscrew is not up to the task.
