Tried last night w/ tarte flambee:
1. Alesia Syrah SonomaCoast (14.2%; www.RhysVineyards.com) Woodside 2003: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/bit peppery light toasty/charred/oak some roasted/espresso/Rhonish light floral/violets/perfumed rather complex very lovely nose; fairly tart lightly tannic rather smooth/balanced/polished strong blackberry/Syrah/peppery light smokey/toasty/oak bit Rhonish/roasted/espresso slight earthy/floral/violets/lilacs almost Hermitage-like very attractive flavor; very long/lingering strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/peppery smooth/balanced/polished slight tannic some roasted/Rhonish/espresso light floral/lilacs/violets beautiful finish; probably as good as it's gonna get; resembles a lot the LaBoheme QueSyrah Syrah (whatever will be....) and a bit a LaChapelle Hermitage; a really terrific fully mature Syrah.

So Syrah that tastes like Syrah, not generic "red wine"?

I love your Rhone notes, Tom!

I think Kevin has done a great job at Rhys, very nice Syrahs and PN's and a terrific small production chard...Not familiar with any Woodside bottlings..My earliest purchases of Alesia and Rhys wines were from the 04 vintage.
