Wanted to try a red wine w/ my pasta, so cracked last night:
1. Il Podere dell'Olivos Refosco BienNacidoVnyd/SantaBarbaraCnty (EB; 12.5%) 1996: Dark color w/ some browning; some brett/horsecollar/sweaty leather light toasty/smokey/oak some plummy/spicy/black cherry bit earthy/graphite/pungent complex bit tired nose; fairly tart earthy/graphite/pungent slight brett/horsecollar fairly smooth light plummy/black cherry/root beer slight astringent/dried out fairly complex flavor; med. tart light brett/horsecollar light plummy/black cherry/RCCola light smokey/oak finish w/ bit dried out/astringent aftertaste; more of an intellectual pleasure than a sensual pleasure; interestin wine and a survivor, but just that.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Assuming Jim got this plant material from FPS/UC/Davis; this would not be true Refosco but, in fact, Mondeuse. Don't know if he still grows the Refosco or not.

Hi Tom -

Thank you for the very interesting note. Given the onetime confusion as to whether or not Refosco and Mondeuse were the same grape, do you happen to know if the BATF still considers Refosco to be a valid synonym for Mondeuse?

Not Sure....

Not sure on that one, Andrew. I strongly suspect they allow the use of both names for the same wine.
It's probably like SauvignonVert...a name that is now deprecated. You can call the wine either TocaiFruliano or Muscadelle du Bordelais...they don't care.
Most all the SauvVert in Calif is, in fact, Muscadelle.
As you probably know, Andrew...the TTB folks are not the best & the brightest. I doubt that everyone has a copy of the new JancisRobinson
sitting on their desk!!! :-)
