Just got around to typing these up.

November 3, 2012 – Wines of Luigi Maffini, Vintages, Concord, MA
Thank you to the staff at Vintages for conducting this interesting little tasting. This was my first experience with the wines of Luigi Maffini, a producer from the southern end of Campania. These wines were not being distributed in Massachusetts for a few years, but have happily returned to our market.

2011 Kratos IGT Paestum
100% Fiano; aged entirely in stainless steel. Medium-bodied, round, bone dry, well balanced, with moderate acidity. Nutty, floral, somewhat mineral, with lemon and white peach flavors. Very good+.

2009 Pietraincatenata IGT Paestum
100% Fiano; partly aged in barriques for 6 months. Fuller, round, bone dry, nicely balanced, with moderate acidity; tropical, nutty, lightly stony/spicy, with citrus notes. Very good+.

2010 Kleos IGT Paestum
100% Aglianico; partly aged in used barriques. Medium-bodied, well balanced, with moderate acidity; more elegant, with pleasant tannins. Tastes of dark berries, cherries, ashes, and grilling spices. Very good.

2007 Cilento DOC “Cenito”
100% Aglianico; Cenito is the name of the village where the grapes for this wine are grown. Partly aged in new barriques. Full-bodied, round, well balanced, with moderate acidity and surprisingly graceful tannins. Shows notes of cherries, dark berries, smoke, espresso, tobacco, and tar. Excellent.
