by TomHill » Thu Oct 04, 2012 11:05 am

Tried last night w/ grilled veggies:
1. LunaVnyds Sangiovese NapaVlly (13.5%) 1996: Med. rather murkey/brown color; some toasty/oak rather spicy/cherry/Sangio/earthy bit cedary/pencilly/cigar box/old Cab slight pungent/DrPepper nose; fairly tart/lean/hard bit tannic/dried out light cherry/licorice/earthy/spicy fairly angular/sharp flavor; med.long tart/dried cherries/dried rose petal/cherry/earthy/old Sangio some toasty/oak finish; an interesting survivor but just that.

2. Venge Sangiovese PennyLaneVnyd/Oakville/NapaVlly (13.0%) 1995: Med. rather brown quite murkey color; strong pungent/charred/smokey/oak rather earthy/RCCola/dried cherries fairly pencilly/cedary/old Cab bit complex nose; softer bit richer/lusher strong toasty/charred/oak bit dried cherries/RCCola some hard/tannic/dried out flavor; long some metallic/tangy/tinney rather cedary/pencilly/old Cab somewhat hard/tannic/angular/dried out light dried cherries/RCCola/rose petal finish; a slightly better survivor buut just that.

A wee BP:
1. These two Sangios wern't totally shot; but they didn't have much fruit and resembled mostly an old Cab. Their colors were pretty brown and quite murkey; but they had been stored upside down and were given only 7-8 hrs to settle out. They were interesting to try...but mostly went down the drain.

The oak sounds worrying. I've found the modern Venge wines to generally be "lavishly" oaked. :?

Hi Tom -

Thank you for the notes. I remember trying the Luna Sangiovese some time ago, and not being overly impressed by it.
