Best Wines in Portugal -2011

by Joe Moryl » Sat Feb 11, 2012 12:40 pm

Just for reference, here is the list of best wines for 2011 from the Portuguese magazine Revista de Vinhos:

http://www.revistadevinhos.iol.pt/notic ... 2011_10778

Lots of limited production reserva type wines in the "Premios de Excelencia" category, but some wines which might be easier to find under the regional lists. I think this list is a good example of what we have here on the shelves in the US is not always representative of what is considered the best in Portugal.

Well now, that is one heck of a list Joe so thanks for posting. Annabelle at DeVines will be happy to see some of the names there. I could tick off quite a few of them, maybe not all the same vintages posted here naturally. I need more time to go through it though, grin wink.

Actually, come to think of it, some of the Douro wines on that first list are certainly available here. I saw the Crasto Maria Teresa in a Newark shop, at $130/bottle, so I won't be having any. But some others, like the Poeira (I bought the '07 for under $40) are not too hard to find. And the second wine of Vale Meao, Meandro, is a great buy - I recently enjoyed a bottle of the 2009 vintage. The choices from outside the Douro and Alentejo will be the difficult ones to find.

Joe, two of the VVs are here, plus there is a good selection of Campolargo available but some prices are right up there..$45 for one of the whites, ouch.
Have you seen any of the Quinta Nova reds Joe?

Campolargo is a somewhat odd bird for Bairrada. Many of his wines are made from grapes that are not typical for the region (those being Baga and maybe Touriga Nacional in reds and Bical and Maria Gomes for whites). And when he does, he will often do something unusual like barrel ferment the whites. The results can be interesting but I think I prefer the producers who do good work with the more traditional grapes (e.g. Bageiras, Saima, Pato, etc.).

When you say the Campolargo whites are $45 there do you mean the barrel fermented Bical or Maria Gomes? If so, ouch! They are $15 dollar wines here. I think I saw a Quinta Nova wine at Astor in NYC, but it is one I haven't yet tried.

Tonight I'm having a glass of the '04 Moscatel de Setubal from Bacalhoa. It is remarkably good for an inexpensive fortified wine.

Just arrived home after a Wines of Portugal tasting downtown. The Campolargo Cercial was wonderful with a pronounced smokey nose and full bodied flavors. The big hit for me was the wine display from Fitapreta. Interesting whites and some very appealing reds, I will rustle up some TNs asap.
