WTN: "Tortoise Creek 2004 Rose` D'Une Nuit"

I posted a semi-rant awhile ago about white-zins and off dry rose wines, and because of the replies I received, my eyes have been opened tremendously. I have done an about face since. :oops: However, all of the embarrassment aside, I have come to discover and realize the tremendous place they DO play in the awesome world of wine. Spicy foods, barbecues and pizza pie are outstanding accompaniments to these "blush beauties". I've also discovered how wide the quality spectrum really is with roses. Also the many different sweet, off dry, or dry styles that there are. Made with just about any of the red wine variety grapes (and more I've never even heard of). Well, now that I'm through with my confession- here's my tasting note:


Tortoise Creek 2004 Vin De Pays D'Oc Rose D'Une Nuit
70% Syrah 30% Grenache 12.5%


Beautiful in the glass, more on the red side of rose than pink/orange-ish.
I served it chilled like a white. Swirl, sniff - Amazing, immense, luscious fruity nose; strawberries, red delicious apple, tart pie cherries. Sip, taste - dry, Seamless nose to palate transfer with addition of minerality note and great zing of acidity bolstering the fruity freshness. Very pure finish, not long, viscous or complex just absolutely refreshing. Great with pizza. Would probably go great with any acidic/tomato based food.
Oh and, I could sniff this stuff all day- absolutely awesome nose!

I used to work for the importer of this wine and I would drink the hell out of it on a hot summer day or at brunch.

Good, cheap, yummy. Works for me.

Has anyone tried the Tortoise Creek Pinot Noir? It just showed up at the shop at $8.

I don't think so unfortunately. I believe that's a new product; there was only rose and red and white rhone blends I believe when I was selling/drinking them...sorry.

Worth a shot though at the price right?

2005 Tortoise Creek Pinot Noir - France, Vin de Pays d'Oc
13% - alcohol well under control. Very primary, just the right side of being too grapy for me. Raspberries on the nose and on the palate. Actually not much else - just a touch of tannin. A real one-note wine. Not a bad note though. Reasonably drinkable, although I think I can do better, even at $8.

Is there even any such animal as a good-under-$10 Pinot?

It's tough. Very, very tough, but I just happened to taste something yesterday afternoon that kind of qualifies:

2004 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Bourgogne Passetoutgrain France, Burgundy, Pinot Noir/Gamay Noir blend
$9.75 for this one. It tastes like actual Burgundian Pinot, with a little added richness from the Gamay. I understand that a lot of Passetoutgrain is drunk in the region, but very litte of it makes it out to the export market. We tasted, and the shop's buyer immediately bought the distributor's entire supply. Of course it wouldn't be that cheap normally - that's a deep closeout price.
