Gotta have me some REAL wine this weekend: an 2001 D'Armailhac and a 1998 Lafon Rochet are already in decanters. Covert's doing one or both, too.

I've got both of those wines. So, what is the deal, kind of a virtual tasting????

I'm opening an '00 Monte Bello at dinner tomorrow night. So it might be some weekend!!

I don't have either, but could I still find them commercially? I can't locate Otto's Italian. I'd rather have the Bordeaux anyway.

James, both are still available, and since you live in the DC area, you might get lucky.

Nuts, I thought you said a 98 GPL. I have a few of those......

I find wine searcher to be inadequate for my purposes. The shops I frequent aren't in their database.

Now some one will tell me I'm wrong. I hope so. I've tried using it in the past with little success.

YOU DA WOMAN!! Finally an open mike to talk about. Will open something '90 or earlier. This should bring out all the Bordeaux Nuts. One of the three wines my wife likes, old Bordeaux, vintage Champagne and Chablis.

I`m up for this one but will have to be something earlier, probably a `90. Chile and Calif. cab sauv can take a back seat (Wine Focus) for a few days!!!!

Oliver, the 98 GPL is drinking fantastically right now--surprisingly big and open--IIRC. [Thinking real hard....] Yeah, it was. And the Pontet Canet wasn't.

Waiting for your report on the two wines... I know you drank them last night...so.. fess up!!

I've got one of these. I'll be happy to hear how it is. I wouldn't expect it to be very approachable now though - this being the year of the tannins and all, and this property being known for being tannic anyway. Tannin + tannin = yikes for now, probably yum in 10 years time. That's the formula I thought for myself based on generalities of vintage and producer, but would be happy to hear what it is actually like!

has anyone tasted the 98 Calon Segur ? I guess it probably needs a few years yet,but would be interested in any feedback on this.

You bet. Since finding it some three or four years ago, I haven't missed, and this last year brought my daughter Karn along, and she says she will never miss it either. So at your offline, please encourage Joel and Sally to continue.
I was also privileged to be on Joel's "WineCAM" committee representing the views of consumers in the effort to open Michigan's borders to wine shipments by wineries. As you probably heard, he was successful and we Michigan consumers owe him a great debt of gratitude for all his efforts.

Keith, good to see you again. No help on the 98 CS from me, but maybe someone else will chime in. If the Lafon Rochet is any gauge, the Calon might be entering an open phase.

Yeah that`s great!! We could sure use your imput over here sometimes as you have a ton of wine tasting experience.
