Well I thought that "heavy hors d'oeuvres" was kind of funny too - aren't they supposed to be light?

That's just a clumsily worded sentence in which the adjective heavy is meant to modify event rather than hors d'oeuvre but is placed in an ambiguous location. There's also the missing comma in the appositive in the first sentence, which is an outright error. The typo is a howler, though.

Yes, I also stopped reading at the heavy hors d'oeuvres, but hey, Big Bullish Bankers and all, they need sustenance..

It's funny because I saw "heavy hors d'oeuvres" in an ad for this weekend's local paper and although I understood what they meant I thought it was strange too! But I did catch the nuisance mistake as well...

No, I think they mean heavy hors d'oeuvres -- chicken wings, that sort of belly filler. I've seen this oxymoron before.
But what do the medical billing people and Merrill Lynch have in common that would make them want to put on a wine tasting?

Another nuisnace of this wine is it's tannins.
