"Count Sen. Carole Migden as, well, crushed."

Governor rejects designating zinfandel state wine

"Whether it is a Cabernet from Napa or Sonoma, a delicate Pinot Noir from the Central Coast, a Zinfandel from the San Joaquin Valley or Sierra Foothills, California produces some of the finest wines in the world," Schwarzenegger wrote in his veto message for SB 1235. "California wines have inspired authors, artists and Oscar-winning motion pictures."

Howard Goldberg's take on the Purple Pages: "Perhaps Schwarzenegger should have named Mendocino’s Gewürztraminer the state wine. He is, after all, comfortable with umlauts."

And the Chronicle reports that Migden continues the punning history of this historic wine:

"Migden said the veto showed the governor didn't have much of a sense of humor.

"It ought not to be a zin to be for Zinfandel," she quipped.

The New York Times added:

“While we were crushed by the veto, the governor will find no sour grapes in our office,” said the bill’s author, State Senator Carole Migden, Democrat of San Francisco. “Next year we will press on.”
