Wine grapes said to be plentiful in New York this year

An interesting story for our New Yorkers and all others following the Eastern wine scene.

With 31,000 acres of vineyards, 239 wineries and nearly 1,400 grape farms, New York is the nation's third largest wine producer and third largest grape grower behind California and Washington. It typically churns out about 200 million bottles of wine each year, generating more than $1 billion in sales.

Harsh winters in 2004 and 2005 left many wineries "low on inventory, so they're looking to replenish their warehouses," [Jim] Trezise said. "The reputation of New York wines keeps going up and up, and so people really want them."

That rising demand could persuade growers to turn a larger percentage of their Concord, Niagara and other native grapes into wine instead of grape juice, Trezise said.

I once had a NY champagne that was delightful...and at a California restaurant, no less. :)

Tim, I think that the coming into its own has happened with a vengeance - not just in New York, but in neighboring states and certainly in our province of Ontario here in Canada. There's lots of good stuff happening wine wise in our part of the world. All that needs to be done is for our society in general to somehow adopt wine as an element of culinary culture as the wine-producing countries of Europe have long done, and as I'm sure the West Coast has done.
