1996 Teófilo Reyes Tinto Cosecha Ribera del Duero Spain. Russo. $25. 1000 cases; the 1994 vintage was the first vintage made under his own name by Teofilo Reyes, then 72. He was Pesquera's winemaker from 1972 to 1992.

I've enjoyed the 1994, 1995 and 1996 vintages of this wine. Although the 1996 is sort of hanging on by its finger tips, and fell apart after an hour in the glass, it did great for a Tinto at this price level. My first note years ago was still accurate last night: "Deep red color; good fruit aroma and taste; good balance of light tannins and fruit; 15 to 20 second finish. 4*."

Amazingly, worked great with soft boiled eggs and rye toast.

Regards, Bob

I had this wine last night as well. I was not as impressed, but then it was outshone by some pretty bright lights. Smelled great. The flavors were ok, but a bit muddled for me.

That was certainly the case here after an hour in the glass. But awfully good in the early going -- and its been kept at 52F since I purchased it.

I wish I had purchased the Reserva -- I've heard that it's developed beautifully.

Do you happen to know if Teófilo Reyes is still alive -- he would be 85 or 86 I think. His sons made some vintages with his help, but I've lost track.
