2008 Pilandro Lugana DOC 13.0%
Had never heard of Lugana until last month, when I tried one in Italy. Quite liked it, so when I saw one by the glass at Locanda Verde, a hip new restaurant in downtown Manhattan, I gave it a shot. Despite being the lowest priced white on the menu. Should have known better. This had a very fragrant, floral nose with some chalk. With air and warming, lots of guava jelly and, very strangely, cheese. Some unspecified cheese. My nine year old daughter suggested a cross between swiss and blue. My ex suggested taleggio. It wasn't bad, just odd. Palate was less interesting. Fruity, but acid-challenged, with some bitterness gamely (but unsuccessfully) trying to take up the slack. Came off as a bit dilute, on the flabby side. Not bad, just so-so.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.
