WTN: 2006 Desvignes Morgon Cote du Py

2006 Louis-Claude Desvignes Morgon Cote du Py 13.0%
Can you think of a better name for a winemaker than Desvignes? Well, this dude may be from the vine, but last night he was hardly divine. This, our first Desvignes, had an unusually dark and serious nose of ripe cherry, licorice and Revell glue. Mouthfeel was thick and chewy, with considerable tannin, muscular fruit, acidity to match, and a bitterness that exceeded the bounds of delicacy. Only a glimmer of strawberry at the end of the tunnel hinted at gamay, otherwise I would have guessed something like syrah. I've lamented before that certain Bojos mimic basic Bourgognes but this was different, though the lament remains the same. I want my spade to taste like a spade, as defined by the Gang of Five and others like Descombes. The bottle was not emptied, something that hasn't happened in a while.

Tonight we open a Desvignes Javernieres to compare his Morgon crus...

That has been my experience with the Desvignes style and is one reason I prefer other more seductive versions of Morgon. But I haven't devoted much attention to their wines and I'm sure they have their merits.

Hmmmm`. Bad luck. I really enjoyed his Fleurie bottling. Gamay typicite did not seem to be a problem there, although it was richer than many (but not all) Cru Beaujos I've had.

Oops. In reading your other tasting note for Beaujolais...I made a mistake. I liked the Descombes, too.
