Screwcap Cab

by John Treder » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:27 pm

I opened a bottle of David Coffaro Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley 2003 last night, with Swiss steak, fried potatoes, carrots and sauteed tomato.
This was the first year that Coffaro bottled with screwcaps.
Very enjoyable, ripe, fresh-tasting with no hint of stems, leaves, bell pepper, etc., yet unquestionably Cab. A definite DCV blackberry flavor, medium length. This tasted young - maybe the screwcaps really do slow down bottle development? Yet it is a Coffaro wine and it's in line with his inimitable style.
14.6% alcohol, $14.40 on futures.

Probably not the screwcap slowing things down just yet. The '03s are still very young. I opened a 2003 Pride Cab about 3 months ago, and it was like a new release.
