WTN: 2007 Descombes Morgon

by Oswaldo Costa » Mon Oct 05, 2009 6:34 am

2007 Georges Descombes Morgon 12.5%
Lovely strawberry and church spice aromas segue into pleasant acidity, tasty fruit, good acid/sweet balance, and good body. No sweetness whatsoever in the finish, so its pleasure is curiously ascetic. Surprisingly large amount of sediment. A very good Morgon, pure and focused.

Church spice? I'm curious as to what that means to you.

I'm sure he meant Frankincense and Myrrh, what else! :D

More seriously, he's used the descriptor before for Morgon and I took it to mean the scent of incense one finds in Catholic churches. Which makes perfect sense to me for Morgon.

My Catholocism lapsed a long time ago, and I don't recall the aroma of the incense, but it's a start!

Yes, that's it. But necessarily just Catholic, it makes me think of Byzantine churches and monks and incense and swinging lamps and long beards and robes and...

Any funk, Oswaldo? My bottle of 2006 Descombes Brouilly certainly had some funkyness.

No funk, Brian, really crystalline (not sure that's the opposite of funky, but you catch my drift).

Who said it was an oak plank? Maybe it's cedar that they use later for grilling salmon.

That would be a very good match indeed.

This is making me want to buy some Morgon! Maybe for this weekend's dinner party..
