WTN: 2003 Petite Bocq

by Jenise » Sun Sep 27, 2009 12:35 pm

2003 Petite Bocq, Ste. Estephe, Bordeaux
I've only had one other PB before, the 2000. And where the 2000 was a very light-bodied, see-thru, feminine style of Bordeaux that accentuates the majority component of merlot, this 2003 is anything but. Dense, almost black, very concentrated. Complex bordelaise nose, and on the palate plums, green tobacco and herbs. Surprisingly dry considering the vintage. Very nice drinking right now, especially with food, and I don't sense that this will be a long-lived wine so will plan on drinking our remaining bottles in the next three years, unless someone offers me a reason not to. Given the odd way many 2003s are evolving I would drink up. Why tempt fate?

Hi Jenise,

I have had this wine just once, and the brother of a friend of mine is winemaker there.

My experience coincides with your second one: a big, dark, fleshy, modern-style Bordeaux with obvious oak.
Sorry, I cannon remember the vintage.

As for 2003, it is "received wisdom" to say the wines are somewhat flabby, atypical, and not for the long haul.
There is some truth to that statement, but let's not generalize :-).

I would not be surprised if your Petit Bocq were at or approaching its peak.

All the best,
Alex
