WTN: 2001 Edmunds St. John Syrah (California)

Just for comparison I opened a 2001 Syrah to go against my recollecitons of the 2000 I had consumed the prior two days. The 2001 is even richer in texture, and yet still retains an elegance that belies its weight. Red and black fruit, turned earth, a meaty/iron quality and a very long finish on the palate. This is even better than the 2000, and I am going to leave my remaining bottles alone for a while. I expect very positive things will happen with 2-3 more years of cellar time.
Recently I had gotten away from Syrah based wines. The two ESJ California Syrahs have brought me right back.
Of course knowing how good these "generic" Syrahs are, I will not be touching my 2001 single vineyard wines for at least 5 more years (ok...maybe 3).
