A couple bottles have stood out amongst the recent Spanish wines that I have tried:
NV Cava Brut de Brut, Reserva Artesania, Cavas Hill: A producer that I had heard of but never before tried. Fine, persistent, carbonation. Fruity nose with some nice yeasty and toast notes. Light bodied, clean and firm. Gives a slightly off-dry impression, but this may be more due to fruit than actual sugar. Very drinkable and well worth the $11.
2007 Verdejo Pie Franco, Blanco Nieva, Rueda: Estate bottled from 100+ year old vines on their original rootstock (sandy soil). Lovely, aromatic stuff. Clearly not riesling or sauvignon blanc but would probably be appreciated by lovers of either grape. Citrusy, grapefruit nose with some citrus and melon on the palate, but very nervy and deep. Would buy more, but local shop is now carrying the '08 - has anyone tried this? Worth the $17 tariff. Composite cork is somewhat disconcerting in a wine of this quality. 12.5% ABV
