WTN: Cafe Culture Pinotage 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Sep 08, 2009 8:53 pm

WO Western Cape
KWV

Dark cherry red in the glass.

Very smoky, heavily charred, band aid on the nose.

Heavily roasted-charred, some bitterness, smoky, roasted cherry fruit, tangy, a little sharp, medium bodied, roasted coffee.

Tangy, sharp, with cherry fruit on the finish.

An extreme style that won't appeal to everyone, but it appealed to me.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

This is KWV's coffee'n'chocolate style Pinotage in response to Diemersfontein's original. They poached Diemersfontein's winemaker Bertus Fourie. He later left KWV and has now announced his own version called Barista. A fourth version called Cappucino has just been released by Boland winery.

Diermersfontein's is a real cult wine and the winery run an annual new vintage festival in its honour.
