What can I expect from this wine?

by Doug Surplus » Fri Aug 28, 2009 9:44 am

One location of my favorite wine store/bar is closing so my Mom, brother and I went there for lunch yesterday. It took two bottles of 06 Domaine Serene Yamhill Cuvee to wash down the excellent sandwiches.

As I was browsing the selections left in the store I found this wine marked down to $40 (reg $75) so I snagged it.

2005 Chauvenet-Chopin Charmottes Nuits-Saint-Georges

Has anybody had this? Any suggestions for a drinking window?

Doug, this is a Nuits St George? Never had this wine, but had a Charmottes from Ligier-Belair, a NSG AC (assume Charmottes is a lieu-dit). Not had a Chauvenet-Chopin wine before, but think it is a small respected domaine. Hopefully someone with direct experience can comment. I tend t find 05 Burgs a bit tight/closed right now. If I was opening now I'd be prepared to air a bit (personally, I'd hold 5-8 years).

Thanks, Dale. Looks like it's a bit unknown around these parts. I think I'll go with the vintage average and just let this one sleep for a while.

Doug Hi...

I've not had the 2005 from this vineyard, but I do know the producer's Nuits St. George in general and the vintage in particular. At an educated guess you'll find a wine with generous tannins still waiting to integrate but even now probably showing plum, cherry and wild berry notes on a lightly spicy background, perhaps a few earthy minerals there. At an estimate I'd suggest trying this one only in 2011 or 2012 and cellaring until 2015-2018.

Guesswork can be fun sometimes. After you open the wine do let me know (a) how brilliant or (b) how bad my guess waw.

Best
