WTN Italian Pinot Noir

by Alan Wolfe » Thu Aug 27, 2009 5:05 pm

Monte Degli Angeli 2006 "Monferrato" DOC Pinot Noir - 13% ABV - $11.99 at Pearson's in D.C. Instantly recognizable as PN when I pulled the cork, something that cannot be said about some $12 PN. I thought this fell somewhere between old world and new world PN, with a nod to Bourgogne. Good red/purple color to the meniscus, also good structural tannins. Not particularly elegant as PN goes, but neither is it clumsy. Acidity not bright but enough to go well with medium-rare roast beef. Medium length finish. An excellent value IMO. I wish I had bought a case.

Wow - sounds like a pretty good deal for $12, Alan. Hope I can find some around here.

We did Burgundies and Pinot Noir at this year's NiagaraCOOL and there was one from Italy, 2007 Lisabella. I don't know who brought it or the price, but IIRC, it was very similar to what you described - easily recognizable as Pinot and sound, but not nearly as complex as many of the others we were tasting that day, some of which were fantastic, but also expensive.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

This wine received an excellent review in the Washington Post 5 (+-) months ago. I bought some for our store and ended up selling 50 cases in 3 weeks. It is the real deal! Its fairly light, but it really works!

This wine is sold by Monsieur Touton ao people between Massachusettes and Virginia should be able to find it, or ordeer it, relatively easily.

Different strokes, I've had this twice and didn't like it. But I've not liked many Italian Pinot Noirs/Neros, including alot that cost a LOT more.
