Some wines enjoyed at Mo'Cool

by JC (NC) » Wed Aug 26, 2009 3:46 pm

A Friday night party for out-of-towners was open to all kinds of wine. The theme for Saturday's picnic was Syrah and Shiraz although there were a couple tables for off-theme wines. My notes on all but a few of the wines were quite skimpy. I reported on the picnic wines under a different thread.
For the Friday Party I took a 2000 Carr Vineyards and Winery Pinot Gris, Turner Vineyard, Santa Rita Hills, CA,
1999 Domaine G. Roumier Chambolle-Musigny A.C., and
2005 Williams Selyem Flax Vineyard Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA
The Roumier Chambolle-Musigny was drinking smoothly; not over-the-hill or shut down. I've been fond of the 1999 red Burgundies and bought more of that vintage than of others. Listed as 13% alcohol by volume.

The Williams Selyem Flax Vineyard Pinot Noir was listed as 14.4% abv. I got a rich cherry nose and flavors--very fragrant. Something of a cherry liqueur (or kirsch as someone said) with maybe some Chinese or Asian spices. Others mentioned pomegranate and lavendar or mint. (Winery notes suggest shitake mushrooms and sassafras, boysenberries, etc. none of which we got.)
Balanced acidity. Alcohol not out of balance with the fruit. I really liked this and so did a number of those that tried it.
Other wines I tasted in small pours include a 1990? Pegau (funky nose but smooth tasting), the 2003 Sherrer Old and Mature Vines Zinfandel which I noted as bright, fruity and smooth, Howie Hart's homemade Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend (quite nice). I missed out on a Tommasi Amarone among others.

Hi JC,

Thanks for the notes on Friday night's wines. The wine of the night for me was a 1989 Lynch-Bages that I think Mike Connor brought. It was drinking very nicely with a wonderful earthy berry nose, great midpalate balance of dark fruit, acidity and powerful but smooth tannins, plus a finish that lingered nicely on the back of the palate.

I missed out on the Lynch Bages but I probably would have enjoyed it.

Tom, thanks for the note on the L-B. I am sitting on 5 bottles of that vintage, wondering when to open one. Sounds like I needn't practice restraint at this time.
Cheers!

My '89 is gone. Got a couple of '90s left. Probably ought to get after them.
