Advice on Italy Wine Tours

by Tom Troiano » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:34 am

My brother is going to Italy in the fall and his tour is offering a few wine-related side trips. Does anyone have any thoughts on which of these might be the more interesting wine trips. Thanks!

1° Itinerary: Visit of three wineries in the Chianti region.

From: Siena or Florence Starting hour: 9,30

• Meeting at your hotel or arrival place (bus stop, train station) to start our tour into the
wineries:
• Az. Agr. I Sodi : visit of the cellar and wine tasting;
• Az. Agr. Terrabianca: visit of the cellar and wine tasting;
• Lunch in a typical Tuscan trattoria where we can enjoy local food;
• Az. Agr. Capannelle: visit and wine tasting;
• 16,30 way back to the hotel.

2° Itinerary: Visit of two wineries in the Chianti region and a medieval town.

From: Siena or Florence Starting hour: 9,30

• Meeting at your hotel or arrival place (bus stop, train station);
• Az. Agr. I Sodi: visit of the cellar and wine tasting;
• Visit of the medieval fortified town of Vertine with its best preserved example of
military architecture in the Chianti area;
• Lunch in a typical tuscan trattoria where we can enjoy local food;
• Az. Agr. Capannelle: visit and wine tasting;
• 16,30 way back to the hotel.

MONTALCINO

truffles too;
• Az. Agr. Capanne Ricci: visit and wine tasting;
• 16,30 way back to the hotel.

2° Itinerary: Visit of one winery and an historical town.

From: Siena or Florence Starting hour: 9,30

• Meeting at your hotel or arrival place (bus stop, train station);
• Az. Agr. Abbadia Ardenga: visit of the cellar and wine tasting;
• Lunch in a typical tuscan trattoria where we can enjoy local food and when possible
truffles too;
• Visit of Lucignano d’Asso from which we will enjoy one of the most impressive views
of hilltops and surroundings;
• 16,30 way back to the hotel.

Not an area I'm greatly au fait with, but the 1st one would appeal most, partly through having tasted the 50:50 that Cappanelle do with Avignonesi. Whilst I was disappointed in the Terrebianca wines I tasted a while back, they're certainly serious wines. Schedule seems pleasantly leisurely as well - or at least not overly rushed.

I have no familiarity with the wines but might favor #2 for the inclusion of the medieval town.

I second this opinion. It would be a pity to miss the opportunity to see a medieval town too.
