2nd hand blind tasting...time for another! Guess the wine.

Always a lot of fun. I give various clues and you have to guess the wine!
Thats pretty simple so I am going to open this white now. Great, screwcap...David will like this one. (I read it can come with cork too).
Think this dry white will go well with pan-fried pork cutlets so stay tuned!

Oh, see it`s 100% varietal. Have opened half hour, think this will need some warmth to show its best.

Color is a pale straw, no green. Nice nose here......white stone-fruit, chalky/minerally, lively/bracing, some floral as it opens and warms. "Citrus, could be lime" from across the table.

Think I will do some cooking and taste later!

You've probably never tasted it, but I think your description would fit Field Stone '06, Alexander Valley.

Hi John, thanks for showing up! Wrong.
What is the grape variety of Field Stone?
I am running this on the UK wine forum and they are all asleep right now, grin. I do not want to give away too many clues at this time, it is a nice nose however.

*****purchased this year during my London trip.

Riesling for sure. I'll think some more and come back to you later, Bob.
Cheers,

Wrong David. Not even close, grin.
Even though not from same country, goes well with my Baba Ghanoush eggplant dip!
More citrus tones on the nose as it airs.

possibly a pinot gris? often quite neutral on opening - esp. with screwcap, but gives out more aromas and flavours with time. Pinot gris goes well with pork too.

Very nice try Sue but...wrong! I am a big fan of PG but this white does not come close. I have to wonder if this grape varietal is cultivated in your area? I will do a google and see!

***** well, have found one example.

Anyhows have a nice dinner here. Sauteed pork tenderloin with roasted baby potatoes and mushrooms. Very acceptable food match with my dry white wine.

My initial entry thoughts are quite dry, crisp, minerally. I do like dry white wines especially when it has the structure like here. Good complexity, nice length with big citrus finish. Drinks well now but back-label says will hold for 4-5 yrs. Why keep I wonder?
"I like the leesy, chalky finish" from across the table. Yup agree, there is some orange here too. Would think more medium-bodied than light, excellent (non-searing) acidity. I don`t believe this wine from this appellation is ever all that savoury, I like the brief nutty hints mixed in with the unripe pineapple and starfruit. "Granny Smith apple and dried apricots" I`m told.
No tropical fruit tones at all here. I am surprised to read on the `net that the harvest for this wine can be as late as October so that rules out southern hemisphere eh.

I have half a bottle saved for tomorrow. I`m calling it a day, it`s midnight MT. See you later!

Bob, could this be something you picked up at RSJ? The citrus/lime bit doesn't sound much like Chenin, though, but some of the other elements might fit.

Something obscure like Arneis?

Perhaps a Sauvignon Blanc that doesn't have all the grassy tones.

Blind tasting is hard enough with the damn thing in your mouth, this is torture!

Well, it is from France but not the Loire. No river of note in this area.
On reflection could be mistaken for Sauv Blanc, David...but wrong.
Not Arneis either!

You've got me floundering here, Bob. Single varietal, you say. It doesn't sound like a Mediterranean wine, Marsanne, Roussanne or Clairette and most there are blends anyway. Jurançon fits some of the characteristics notably the minerals and acidity (but that is usually a blend Gros & Petit Manseng +Courbu). Or a northerly Chard without malo, say Chablis. But I don't get lime or quasi Sauvignon at either of these two.

Any more hints?

Good for you Tim, Jurancon Sec.

It`s the `07 Lapeyre, purchased from the Sampler in London for around $22 I`d say. I have no real experience of this region but liking S France as I do, I dug out a travellors cheque!

I also posted on UK forum, big response but no-one even close! Have just announced the wine there.

Good deductions Tim.

Sauvignon Blanc, Alexander Valley. It's usually better as it warms up.

I dont think any Gros Manseng (the grape in your wine) is cultivated in my area - unless you are lumping NZ in with the closest west island. What did you find?

I think it is a load of fun but not easy to do when one is trying not to give too many hints away.

48 hrs later, this wine is still singing. Must be the acidity holding it all together?
