WTN: 2007 Pelee Island Gamay Noir Zweigelt (VQA Ontario)

$10.95 in the VQA section of the LCBO. Pressed-particle natural cork closure. 12.5% alc./vol.

Clear dark ruby with a crimson-scarlet hue when held up to the light. Some minor youthful effervescence at the bottom of the glass. Spice-infused red-cherry fruit on the nose with a savoury quality upon swirling. Appetizing, with a Northern Italian-type aroma. Crisp, dry, well structured and spicy on the mid-palate. Extremely pleasant wine; very food-friendly and palate-cleansing. Light- to medium-bodied. Warm and balanced on the finish with good tannic replays.

A 50/50 blend of Gamy and Zweigelt, this wine is one of the best blends that Pelee Island has going for it, and it's a blend that I strongly suggest become more common across Southern Ontario's wine regions. Basically, it works: the lively cherry/strawberry fruit of the Gamay gets a welcome added dimension from the peppery spiciness of the Zweigelt. The blend produces a tasty, well-rounded wine with healthy acidity, pleasant flavours and a decent tannin structure.
