Given the very high temperatures here, and my recent trip to Austria, I thought an Austrian riesling would hit the spot. This was an excellent, refreshing wine from a great Kamptal winemaker, vintage and vineyard (my favourite riesling vineyard in the Kamptal, both quality-wise and aesthetically speaking - it's a beautiful vineyard).
- 2005 Weingut Hirsch Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (7/31/2009)
Light golden yellow in colour, with a lovely nose of minerals, yellow flowers (acacia?) and peaches. Nice weight on the palate, with apricots, peaches, minerals, pineapples and green apples. Just a hint of RS, but it finishes dry, though not as bone dry as some Austrian rieslings. A lovely, juicy, well balanced riesling that should last another 5 years easily. (A-)
