Full bodied, smooth, rich and still well structured, this may still be another 5 years or so from reaching its peak, but already gives immense pleasure.
1997 Domaine du Pegau Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée, 13.5% alc.: Good dark color and not nearly as effusive aromatically as the '95 noted above, nor as perfumed; also leaner and sleeker in the mouth, but it does give nice earthy, smoky beetroot, plum and iron. A solid and enjoyable Pegau, but not an exceptional one; may have a few more years of improvement, but no reason you can't open and enjoy one now.

Thanks for the update, geo. I have the '95 down in the Bat Cave and I'll keep it there a good while longer. On a different note, I picked up two Left Foot Charley wines while in Saugatuck a couple weeks ago (I told the retailer how excited I was to find those wines there as last year they didn't carry 'em). The Murmur was pleasant, but haven't yet opened the rosé.

I had the '95 Pegau about a year or so ago - thought it excellent, if surprisingly youthful with a fair bit of tannin still remaining (and a number of years ahead). Interesting to see those alcohol levels - in the last few years haven't they been closer to the 15% range?
