WTN: 2003 Bordeaux, 2001 Felsina Fontarollo

by Brian K Miller » Tue Jul 28, 2009 11:00 am

Beau, one of the owners of Wine Styles, was kind enough to bring in a bottle of 2003 Chateau Smith Haut Laffite Pessac Leognan. This showed the 2003 vintage definitely...with a huge nose of leather, tobacco, and chocolate. Maybe a bit much for one of Vacaville's godawful midsummer evenings, but SHL was one of my very first good Bordeaux, and I enjoyed this quite a bit.

2001 Felsina Fontalloro Toscona IGT. This got mixed reviews on cellartracker, and I am going to copy user "Kevin S" who pretty much nailed it:
Medium weight. Sour cherry palate, with some cedar notes, perhaps a little lean. There's good length on the finish and it was better when paired with food, but stand alone this is a bit lacking.
Definitely didn't show its best when compared to a very rich Bordeaux. Not bad, just not all that exciting. I have had better luck with Felsina's Chiantis, which I consistently like!

I have never figured out why the Fontalloro is not a better wine. I'm a huge fan of all the Felsina Chianti, but when it comes to the IGT I always opt for the Fontodi Flaccianello.

Is it slicked up?

We were given a bottle of the 1998 as a wedding gift that I was looking forward to opening, until hearing some ho-hum views on the wine from various people.

I don't find it slicked up, just boring.

That seems to be the consensus...just boring. I mean, it wasn't bad per se...it did show some Sangiovese typicite. But, despite being stored very well, it tasted a little over-the-hill. Which is odd, given that I've relatively recently had 1995 Rancia that was stunning.

My wine drinking friends are going to be disappointed in my cellar. Too many "duds" lately. :?

Maybe they don't take enough of the good juice out of the Chianti.

I've not had the 1998 or the 2001, but I've liked the '93, '95, and '99 Fontalloros. '99 is still quite tannic, but think it's going to be a nice drink. Not Pergole Torte, but then what is?
