WTN: Côtes du Rhône in solid form

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jul 28, 2009 7:32 am

2007 Château de Ségriès Côtes du Rhône Clos de l'Hermitage
On Sunday night I had a young Ridge Petite Sirah that was dense, monolithic and tannic. On Monday I had a Côtes du Rhône that was virtually indistinguishable from the Petite Sirah. This is a solid block of a wine, a wall of material with no point of entry. I ended up having it with a grilled steak, and the wine just blotted out the food like a solar eclipse. I didn't find the wine sweet or goopy, just inexcusably huge and closed for Côtes du Rhône. This was the Brock Lesnar of Côtes du Rhône wines - massive, unyielding and to a great degreee stupefying. I think I will leave my hands off this for a while.

Wow....the Brock Lesnar of wines.

Have you ever had the Umaga of wines?
Or a Mark Henry of wines?

As an update this wine was much more open and giving on night 2. I will therefore either decant well before drinking or just let the rest sleep a few years.
