NYC Wine Store Rec

by wrcstl » Mon Jul 27, 2009 5:06 pm

When I go to NYC CSW is a must visit, even if I only have time for one wine store. My problem this trip is time and will be coming over 495 from Queens. Crush seems to be convenient but I always found them expensive. What about Sherry-Lehmann or do I have to make the big trip south to CSW. This is a big family event with no real wine geeks so I am looking for inexpensive ($12-25), one meal will be homemade pizza, one will be ribs. Want to take the opportunity to try some stuff I can't get in the midwest. Where the best place for one stop shopping.

I don't know a whole lot about Queens but this place always struck me as one of the better shops: http://www.nywines.com/default.aspx

They mainly focus on stuff above your price range but should have some interesting options.

Sherry-Lehmannn can be one of the most expensive stores in the city but when it comes to moderately priced wines they are also one of the very best. Let the sales-person know that you are fairly wine knowledgeable and you can do very well indeed there. Indeed, one of the stores that I never miss on my visits to the city.

Hee hee. I had to think for a second what 495 was (LIE, for NYers who are shaking their heads)

CSW remains my favorite one stop shopping

Sherry Lehmann is a great store in a lot of ways. I'm not so wild about some of the under $20 stuff they push, and a lot of stuff was offsite before, unsure about new location.

If you're coming on LIE/tunnel, it's probably about as fast to go down to Astor (and easier/cheaper parking) as to go up to 57th (Crush) or 59th (SL). Better prices.

If you're coming south to get on LIE, think about going north instead- cross Triborough (oops. RFK) and go to PJs. Easier to park in Inwood than Midtown or below. For that matter, does it have to be Manhattan- how about taking Triborough or Whitestone and going to Westchester to Zachys or Grapes (Posner)? Or go east to Pops or Post. I'm not trying to be a smartass, but there are many places in Queens where I could make a roundtrip to Grapes, Zachys or Post far faster than Sherry-L or Crush (and not pay for parking!) Plus, for your needs, I'm sure there are good Queens stores, I just don't know them.

Dale,
OK, Crush and SL are out. I may actually take the train across with my son-in-law so we could easily bring back a case. Where we are staying you can see the UN building (I have been told) so we are barely in Queens. PJ sounds good but using the train does it make sense. I always wanted to go there but it seems out of the way. What about Astor or even keep going to CSW. Don't know the subway well enough to know which stores are more covenient.

If you post where you are staying I can help navigate the subway possibilities with you.

As Matt says, it depends what subway. If you're on 7 probably just as easy to take to PA and take 1/2/3 to Chambers as anything (or switch to 6 and go to Garnet). If closer to NRQ line probably Astor is easiest.

If you're in LIC, the only Queens store I know is there (NY Wine Warehouse). But more a Burg specialist, and unsure if they even have regular store (I've only ordered for shipping)

Will be on the 7 so might as well go to CSW, my favorite place anyway

I posted their website link above. They do have a regular store (I've been there) and although they focus on Burgundy they do have a lot of other stuff.

Couldn't take the pressure of breaking in a major new store so will be taking the subway to CSW. An added plus is Sat from 4-7 they will have a tasting of some newly imported wines from Alsace, including a PN which will never find its way to the midwest. I really enjoy the eclectic small producer from CSW. Here in St Louis I have a great wine store but unless the wine has been around for 20 years you won't find it. No ESJ, no Dressner on and on and on.
