WTN: Havens Carneros Syrah '93...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Jul 26, 2009 9:09 pm

Tried last week w/ my tofu kebobs:
1. Havens Syrah Carneros (13.2%) 1993: Dark color w/ slight browning; some pungent/gunpowder/blackberry/Syrah/licorice bit toasty/oak some SouthernRhonish/garrigue somewhat bretty/horsecollar/barnyardy/funky fairly complex nose; soft some tannic/astringent/dried out/metallic some pungent/licorice/blackberry/Syrah rather bretty/barnyardy/unclean flavor; long pretty tannic/astringent/dried out slight licorice/pungent/earthy/blackberry/Syrah rather bretty/barnyardy finish; quite interesting/complex/bit SouthernRhone nose but too bretty/unclean/merde/barnyardy and tannic/dried out on the palate. $23.00

1. This was one of the first crops off LeeHudson's Syrah vnyd in the Carneros. It was a terrific wine upon release but soon developed a bit of brett. At 16 yrs, the brett has gotten out of hand and lost much of its fruit. It still speaks of Syrah and the nose is quite interesting, but its best days are in the past...unlike some of us.
