Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2004 - Very dark but not inky. Just a little bit of heat on the nose. Attractive dryish minty, leafy aromas. Medium-bodied. Lovely balance with everything in the right place. Ripe fruit, a little leather and dried herbs on the dry palate. Hint of preserved Chinese plums. Good acidity frames the wine. This has enough complexity to keep things interesting. There is some oak but it barely registers and is only noticeable on the long, dry finish. Soft tannins make this wine immediately approachable. There seems to be room for additional improvement with age but it's very nice now.

Chateau Pey La Tour Reserve du Chateau 2005 - Bordeaux Superieur. Very deep, dark color. Dry wine but with ripe fruit evident. Light to medium bodied. Savory and soft. Dried herbs. I kept some to try on day 2. It seemed a bit more firm and lively. Not a lot going on here. Nicely balanced. Easy, uncomplicated Bordeaux for current drinking. Solid value.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
