New $1m wine book to launch in spring + Poll

by Sue Courtney » Fri Jul 17, 2009 8:51 pm

From Decanter:
"July 17, 2009

A US$1m wine book weighing 30kg is set to be released next year.

The Wine Opus will list the world's top 100 wineries.

As well as its US$1m (£600,000) price tag, at 30kg (66lbs) it will weigh as much as the average labrador dog (pictured), or a nine-year-old child. "

This sounds like a really big joke.

With really bad timing.

Apologies to Rogov. By habit, this forum is my first point of call.

I checked the date. Not April 1.

I have to admit that I believe there are books out there worth a million dollars U.S. This isn't one of them. Now find me a Gutenberg Bible or a First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays and we might have a different conversation.

The answer is blowin' in the wind.

As I read your post, I tried to figure out whether $1m meant $1,000,000 or a measly $1,000. Depending on the lexicon, one could be talking k/m for thousand/million or m/mm for thousand/million. Then I realized that it really didn't matter. Unless we're talking about a book that is really an investment vehicle in disguise, I wouldn't pay even $1,000 for a book that was intended solely for reading.
Cheers!

I voted that it belongs on the shelf of every wine lover. Dare we say that $US 1,000,000 is too dear, especially since the offer includes 600 bottles of wine? Aside from which, I am quite certain that the binding and the printing will be exquisite. And better yet, I am unreliably informed that two of the world's best wineries are going to be Charles Shaw and Gato Negro. And that the wine chosen from Beringer will be their 1979 White Zinfandel. How dare we pass up such a munificent offer and still call ourselves "wine lovers".

The truth - one of the most vulgar ideas ever! I truly pity anyone weak of mind enough to order this book.

No problem having a discussion of this is each wine forum, as many of the folks don't do much cross-posting.
