WTN: 2007 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Auslese

by Salil » Wed Jul 15, 2009 11:04 am

Thrilling stuff, this is packed with layers of honey-drenched tropical fruits, cherries, yellow plums and limes with intense stony mineral notes underneath. No shortage of acidity here; this feels almost chiseled in the mouth with amazing precision and balance and finishes very long leaving streaks of tropical fruits and minerals in the mouth. Awesome.

I'm going to mess up on the vintage, maybe it was 2003, but I recall some monster auslesen that were like bargain TBA. I didn't actually buy them, but I recall being very impressed.

Even the '99 Morstein Auslese was a pretty massive wine (past BA ripeness level, I'm sure) - but was really well balanced and a gorgeous wine. In fact that sense of balance is something I've noticed in all the Wittmann Rieslings I've had, regardless of vintage or ripeness/style.
