WTN: 2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Auslese 2-star

(Riesling, of course, although it didn't fit in the title.)

Opened this with very high expectations; gave this a few hours in the decanter and this didn't disappoint. Stunning stuff, just packed with layers of really delicious, refreshing fruit ranging from pineapples and tropical fruits to apples and limes. There are softer honey and spice notes suggesting a fair bit of botrytis, and a smoky, slatey aromatic element that emerges with some air. Very rich and round in the mouth with lots of sweetness, but it's kept in perfect balance with bright acidity underneath giving it a sense of energy and refreshment. Incredibly long finish that's all lime and pineapple. Really delicious.

Nice. Glad that it showed well. Did you taste it immediately after opening? Was it tough?

Wasn't tough at all - actually it was just a mouthful of incredibly pure and bright fruit without any of the botrytis or the slate showing then, and incredibly delicious.

I don't find that extremely rich auslese ever totally closes down. There's so much material that there is always something to enjoy.
