Am now about half way thru a new book: When The Rivers Ran Red: An Amazing Story of Courage and Triumph in America's Wine Country. By Vivienne Sosnowski. It's a book about Calif's winemaking families (most Sonoma, some Napa; mostly Italian, of course) and how they dealt with the trials & tribulations of America's Grand Experiment: Prohibition.
Although not quite a riveting a read as To Cork or Not To Cork or The Botanist and The Vintner, two books I just couldn't put down, this book is a fascinating glimpse of history nearly the equal of those two tomes. It's hard not to read it without getting your dander up about how the Wets steamrollerred Prohibition off on the American public and the devious way winemakers and drinkers worked their way around those stupid laws.
Ms.Sosnowski has done a very thorough job of researching the topic and interviewing some of the still-living folks that were directly involved (like LouFoppiano). Her excellent writing weaves the story into a fascinating tale of perserverance.
A highly recommended read.
