My `01 Schloss Schonberg hits the spot!

WTN: `01 Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Riesling Spat. Halbtrocken, Schloss Schonborn.

From the cellar, purchased in `05, cost was $24 Cdn.
11.5% alc, opened an hour, served initially way too chilled. Good cork, no gunk. Rheingau naturally.
AP# 31 052 020 02.

I do not have the experience of many German wine lovers here on this forum and I have been neglecting this region of late so bear with me please!

Color. Deep lemon, almost verging on a light gold.
Nose. Tons going on here and very appealing. Spice, slight hint of gasolein, lime, stone fruit. "Minerally" from across the table. Not a big tropical fruit aroma at all. Expressive.
Palate. On entry almost a hint of effervescence but not pronounced like others, zippy finish, non-creamy. I found some green BC apples, pineapple, soft acidity..."peach, off-dry, melon".
Medium length finish which impressed as wine warmed up. Still has a life ahead but guess drinking close to prime? Unmistakeable wine indeed, so happy to have another bottle at hand.

**** held up really well overnight, some terrific added pineapple tones on the finish. Yum.

Glad you enjoyed it Bob.

Given that the wine is a halbtrocken I would (generally) advise to drink up, but there's likely no harm is letting your other bottle rest another couple of years.

Sounds very nice Bob. I'd be curious to try a couple more of the recent Schonborn wines in the streak of really good-to-phenomenal vintages from 01 onwards... I've heard from quite a few people that they were very inconsistent before then, although I've had a couple of good experiences with some older stuff from Garagiste, and a really lovely '02 Erbacher Marcobrunn Spat.

Not just from some self-styled, blathering Riesling expert?
