WTN: '07 Anthony Road Semi-dry Riesling

2007 Anthony Road, Semi-dry, Finger Lakes, Riesling ($15.99 U.S.). Alcohol level: 12.3%; and R.S.: 1.9%. We picked this one up at Bremer’s in Utica, NY during a trip last month. It was the first we’ve had since the ’06 we posted on a couple of years ago. It was the same very high quality, but a quite different wine.

It gives you a profound sense of green on the nose and upfront; green apples, grapes, and limes. In the still fruity and complex middle it offers rich mouth feel, along with both crispness and honey; and the finish goes on and on.

We had to share it with two son-in-laws for Fathers’ Day dinner. I smoked a turkey, and true love provided mashed potatoes and honeyed carrots. It all went together swimmingly.

The 2007s from FLs and Ontario are astounding.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Carl, Howie:

If you liked the '07 Rieslings at Anthony Road, the '08 versions are even better. Just got done taking a loop around Seneca Lake and was very impressed overall with '08 as a Riesling year - '07 was a bit warm and some of those wines can be a bit cumbersome. I'll post some general impressions if I get a chance.

Thanks Joe, that's good news. We were only able to get to Utica and back with an overnight, so it was a quick trip. Bremer's is always our court of last resort if we don't have time to get over to the Finger Lakes. This time the shelves were very bare. We grabbed the last on the shelf of the '07 Anthony Road and two or three other wines. There was a lot of dreck on the shelves including fruit wines and house wines from Anthony Road and several other FL producers. We were not sure if they down scaling or inbetween vintages. The young man who checked us out did not know. Hopfully it was the latter.

At any rate we are looking forward to the '08s.

To revive an old thread: I pulled the cork on the '08 version of this wine a few nights ago and it was delightful. The sweetness was perfectly balanced by some bright acidity and slatey notes. Very young and primary with a touch of spritz - fresh summer drinking at this point but will likely improve. And they are back to using natural corks on this wine. Nice stuff for $15.
