TN: Two With Dinner..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jun 08, 2009 1:32 pm

Tried last night w/ my grilled veggies:
1. EdmundsStJohn TheShadow Calif Syrah (13.9%; http://www.EdmundsStJohn.com) 2002: Very dark/near black color; strong blackberry/Syrah earthy/spicy/mushroomy fairly fragrant/perfumed slight peppery nose; tart some tannic/hard rather earthy/blackberry/Syrah/mushroomy slight roasted/Rhonish bit tight/closed flavor; long somewhat hard/tannic tight some blackberry/Syrah/spicy/earthy/mushroomy finish; still needs 2-5 yrs; seems tight & closed. $12.50

2. DoverCanyonWnry Cujo PasoRobles Zin (15.7%; http://www.DoverCanyon.com) 2007: Very dark color; intense blackberry/boysenberry/jammy classic PRZin perfumey slight lifted/volatile nose; intense blackberry/boysenberry/jammy/PasoZin lush/intense fruit flavor; long intense blackberry/boysenberry/jammy finish w/ modest tannins; a classic PasoZin along the lines of the Ridge PasoZin; good structure and not at all fat/flabby; great deal at $16.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I was expecting a bit more evolution in TheShadow. Based on my first tasting of this wine on release, I expected a long & glorious life for this wine. Instead, it seem still pretty tight & closed. Has TheShadow shut down?? Beats heck out of me. Maybe it's just not delivering up to my expectations yet. I'm totally clueless.

I'm not really sure of what to do with The Shadow. It has clouded my mind. Maybe Orson Welles knows what to do.

Unless you need the cellar space...

If you only tasted it on release then you have missed a lot of its 'shut down' life. Maybe Steve can chime in with more details.

Rahsaan,

I always need the cellar space.
