WTN: Gunderloch Riesling Spatlese 2000

by Bruce Hayes » Thu Jun 04, 2009 1:50 pm

Nackenheim Rothenberg
Rheinhessen

Light gold in the glass.

Lots of petrol on the nose.

Medium weight, slightly overripe green apple, petrol, spicy, richly honeyed, mouthwatering, quite rich, good acidity.

Mouthwatering, honey and apples on the very long finish.

Delicious and quite gulpable.

My wife and I consumed the last few sips some hours after supper, and the wine appeared to be somewhat thicker and denser and showed even more honey.

Purchased at $26.95 (Canadian).

Thanks for the note Bruce. Glad this showed well - good to see a producer like Gunderloch standing above what generally was an iffy vintage (where many wines are already quite tired or disjointed).

Insightful comment, Salil. I merely read the note thinking "there's one of my favorite rieslings" meaning Gunderloch Spatlese in general and not putting it into vintage context.

Yes, although the combination of 'petrol', 'honey' and 'overripe green apple' (not sure what that means since I usually think of green apple as a less-ripe wine, which therefore probably speaks to the slightly disjointed nature of the wine, enjoyment notwithstanding) as descriptors do sound somewhat consistent with the problems of the vintage.
