WTN: 1997 Hiedler Gruner Veltliner 'Maximum'

by David M. Bueker » Wed Jun 03, 2009 11:31 am

I held my last bottle of this wine for scientific purposes. I would not characterize the experiement as a success, though it was not a complete failure.

The wine was perfectly sound, but it was somewhat boring. There wasn't much fruit left except for brief elements of some kind of "roasted" pit fruit. I did pick up some waxy and wooly elements not unlike Loire Chenin Blanc. Overall I was not impressed. It did work better with the food though. I had grilled some asparagus & some chicken & garlic sausages, and the wine picked up on both foods to brighten up and gain focus. It made an agreeable but not outstanding match.

For the $20 I paid at the time it was fun to try the experiement.

Sounds interesting; I've never come across those wooly/waxy elements in Gruner before.

Love the picture!
