Apolgizes but it turns out we have the Baron not the Comtesse.

Lucky you - a much better wine than the Comtesse in that vintage!

Yes. When I saw your note, I thought my friend who organised the purchase normally does his homework so I better check. We also have a 59 Marc Bredif Vouray for dinner. All else fails, we will just have to crack open a bottle of Jacobs Creek :)

My bet is that you'll not need to attack the Jacob's Creek.

Just a quick nostalgic note. I went to college in 1962 and soon became interested in good wine. By the time I was old enough to start buying, 1959 was being touted as the "vintage of the century" -- one of many that I have seen come and go. I think I could have bought the 1959 Lafite-Rothschild for $25, if I had had $25 to spend. Remember at that time you could get a $20 gold piece for less than $40, a house for less than $10,000, and a new car for about $1000...

A few choices, including a Rioja, which might be expected to be a long-lived sort, are listed on Winebid.com http://www.winebid.com/buy_wine/browse_by_vintage.aspx?VintageYear=1959

Bill

You were correct. Certainly didn't need the Jacob's Creek.
