WTN: 1999 Darting Dürkheimer Hochbenn Muskateller Eiswein

by David M. Bueker » Sat May 09, 2009 7:57 pm

Golden colored elixir that combines honey, subtle spice & essence of Muscat florality. The fruit is suspended in a high wire act of sweetness and acidity that must be tasted to be believed. Stunning wine, and yet another QPR gem in sweet wine from Darting.

NICE! Very envious as I've only had the 'declassified' Muskateller Spatlese/baby-Eiswein from this vintage that was absolutely gorgeous... can only imagine how good this must have been.

(Darn it... I really need to buy some Darting sweet wines!)

I plowed through a half a dozen bottles of that "failed eiswein spatlese" (which is what it was) in the early 2000s. For about double the sticker price the real eiswein is about triple the pleasure (and I really liked the spatlese).

Double the sticker price?
I bought one bottle of that Muskateller baby-Eiswein in Chicago (one of those oddities hidden in the back of Howard's Wine Cellar about) for about $15 a year or two ago and loved it. That was a gorgeous wine - if the Eiswein was seriously *that* much better and only twice as much, I'm in awe.

I definitely do need to give Darting more regard (although his wines don't show up that often)... the stuff I've had from him has ranged from really solid and consistent while really cheap (his 1L Kabinett bottling in 05) to seriously stunning (the Muskateller above and the Scheurebe TBA you opened for me a few weeks ago), and I've never had a wine from him yet that I didn't enjoy, or one that gave me second thoughts with regard to pricing.

Yep. My database shows I paid $29 each for the 6 500 ml bottles of Eiswein. Still one left. Twist Laura's arm & you might get to try it.
