WTN: 2000 Chateau Musar (rouge)

by Oswaldo Costa » Mon May 04, 2009 6:28 am

2000 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley 13.5%
From half bottle, poured 15 minutes after opening, tasted 15 minutes after pouring, at 21C. Some brett, which later dissipates, and aromas of leather, coffee and prunes. Before food, acidity is bracing yet fresh and pleasurable, with a curious lemon tinge. No oxidative notes. Less tannic than expected, with a slightly bitter finish, like an olive. With food, the acid/sweet balance became quite lovely. We were sad to see it go into the oesophagal sunset, all too quickly.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.

Musar-olic Bob here! Nice to see you branching out Oswaldo.

Otto is in London right now and some pals on the UK wine forum are having a Musar evening tonite!

I have found this a very enjoyable year for Musar, but perhaps not in the awesomeness range of the '99. It is now a while since I last had one (must try one soon again - I might get one for the weekend), but I remember it as more tannic-forward than the usual for Musar, which I have normally found carried by the acid. I will be intrigued to try it again, as I see no mention of tannins your note!

They are mentioned, right after "No oxidative notes"! They were surprisingly light, so I'm curious to see how yours goes. I doubt the half bottle was a factor, since I imagine the 2000s were bottled recently, no?
